Nuraghe Majore

In the territory of Ittiri there are sixty-three nuraghe (tn* large megalithic, tower-shaped, prehistoric stone structures found in Sardinia, dating from the second millennium BC to the Roman conquest); among these, there are some interesting complex nuraghe that have more than one tower, like the Nuraghe Majore. This nuraghe is located on a slightly higher ground, about a kilometre from Ittiri, along the road to Villanova Monteleone. It is a two-tower construction, made from trachyte stones of great dimensions positioned in irregular rows. The fortified tower still stands to a height of about eight metres against another tower with a slightly elliptical shape. We can still see the internal niche of this tower from above, covered by a limestone wall of perfectly squared off stones. The presence of a thick layer of collapsed stone obstructs access to the inside of the monument. Among the ruins, we can clearly see limestone stones. Near the monument there are traces of straight walls made from big blocks of trachyte, which indicate the area was occupied after the Nuragic Age (tn* Bronze Age, 1800-1500 BC). mong the ceramics found, there are fragments of common ollas and bowls from the Nuragic Age and fragments of bricks and ceramics from the Roman Age (tn* 237 BC – 456 AD).
