Church of Saint Matthew

The church of Saint Matthew is a small countryside church located near the old village of Ploaghe, on the southern slope of the panoramic volcanic mountain that bears its name. From this position, the church overlooks great part of the historic centre and the new neighbourhoods built during the last few decades, towards east. It is documented since 1649, when it was subject to renovation work. The building of modest dimensions, measures 12.50 metres by 7 and consists of a low rectangular nave and only one altar. It has two entrances, a lateral one and a frontal one from where the small bell tower stands out, renovated in 1916 as declared on arock carving. In this church the feast of saint Matthew was regularly celebrated on the 21st of Septemberfor centuries, up until the second half of the 1900s. After half a century of abandonment, it was restored and returned to worship on September 21st, 2011.
