Tissi
Wash house
Tissi is a small village eight kilometres from Sassari, located on a limestone plateau in a mainly hilly area, covered by Mediterranean shrubland. The town has received a great heritage from the past, such as the wash house located in Via Pozzo Nuovo and built in 1905 by the Engineer Franchetti. From 1880-1920 renovation and restoration work was done on the fountains, water troughs and aqueducts of the village. The wash house is a limestone squared-rectangular structure. On the two main façades, there are a series of openings indicated by small pillars that support the frame of the wooden roof. Inside, there is a central load-bearing wall, intersecting with wide arches and surrounded by a big stone water basin. The floor is made of trachyte slabs. Along the main sides, there are two steps crowned by slabs of pietra serena (tn*a blue-gray sandstone used extensively in Renaissance Florence for architectural details). The steps are carved into limestone, the original foundation material of the structure.
