Usini
Casa Diaz courtyard
The courtyard of Casa Diaz, the “Diaz house”, is located in the central square “Piazza Castello”, in Usini, and shows the strong agricultural vocation of the town between the 19th century and half of the 20th. Its first owner was the land owner Giuseppe Derosas. The house was then handed down to the Diaz family, thanks to the wedding between Don Giovanni Antonio Diaz and Donna Giovanna Maria Derosas, daughter of Giuseppe Derosas. The Diaz were nobles among the most important land owners in Sardinia and they possessed, inside their courtyard, the most modern machinery of their times. The main entrance of the building consists of a tall doorway that opens into a courtyard: besides the barnyard and the stables, there is also the mechanical vehicles workshop, the grain storage room and the olive-press. The wine cellars and the great wooden barrels, still intact, highlight the importance of wine production. In fact, olive trees, artichokes and grapevines were the true economic driving force of the time. The Courtyard structure was the heart of the Diaz farm, that provided work for the inhabitants of Usini for years. Property of the Town Council since 2008, it will become “Courtyard and cellar of the Cagnulari wine par excellence”, after important redevelopment work as part of the Territorial Program of the Union of Towns of Coros. It will showcase local wines and producers operating in the territory. The project includes the restoration, redevelopment and legal compliance of the structures and spaces of the Courtyard of Casa Diaz. In detail, the access corridor to the courtyard will be improved; the olive-press will be fixed and the electrical system will be installed; the stalls on the right of the corridor will be renovated and cleaned up; in the workshop a roof and external fixtures will be restored; the cellars will be completely renovated, including the halls, the veranda and the manger. Eventually, a lighting system will be added and connected to a video surveillance system.
